The Power of Narrative : Building a Creative Vision

20 March 2012

Most people in the business have been either brainstorming or have taken part in “out-of-the-box” thinking sessions when building a Creative Vision. But the problem is, while some ideas stick many don’t. And then, once committed to these ideas, two nagging questions often rear up: are we moving forward on the right track? Will this approach actually deliver results?

This master class will be delivered by Mark Shekter and Nancy Trites Botkin of First Star International. They will introduce an entirely new and proven methodology (Think8) for building a Creative Vision for any type of media project. The value of the Think8 system is that it’s a natural complement to all computer and graphics technologies and has been called “Creative Thinking Software” for the digital age. After years of research into the patterns of success (books, TV shows, films or other media), Mark Shekter found that “creative thinking” was not random, but rather “directed thinking”. His system has been taught to thousands, enabling creative directors, designers, game-developers, artists, and programmers to “rethink how they think” about building a creative vision, strong characters and immersive stories for their products.

Mark is an internationally recognized writer/producer/composer of award-winning Television and Film, with over 1000 hours of production seen over 120 countries. His work in animation, live-action and factual entertainment has garnered Emmy’s, New York Film Critics and Europe’s Rose D’Or prizes producing for such stars as Steve Martin, Jim Carrey, Elton John and Ray Charles. His credits include such international hits as Vampire High, A&E’s Biography and Investigative Reports, Traders and Animated Classics for the Disney networks. Recognizing the importance of concept development and narrative structure as the baseline for the creation of all media, Mark developed an innovative methodology for Creative Development with which he now consults to companies including major TV networks, Endemol, Ubisoft, film and VFX companies.

A specialist in story creation and structure, and currently designing social and casual games for multiple platforms, Nancy Trites Botkin has instructed producers, writers, directors, production designers and others in the craft of narrative design, and consulted to companies worldwide including the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Endemol, South Africa, Ubisoft, Hibernum and others. Nancy has won over 60 international awards in TV and FILM including an Emmy for the HBO production Heaven on Earth staring Hume Cronyn, the Houston, New York, Chicago and San Francisco Gold Film awards, two US Parent’s Choice Awards and an Oscar Short-List for the film Red Shoes. As a first female remote director for ABC Network in Denver, Nancy is responsible for over 450 television shows like Toy Castle and Vampire High, and seven films, including the international hit For Angela produced with the National Film Board, that garnered many awards like the Gemini’s most prestigious: The Canada Award.

The master class will take place on May 25th at Centre NAD.
